Ohalo College in Katzrin - Academic Institute for Education, Sciences and Sports

Keynote speech at Oxford University

Prof. Shimon Amar, President of Ohalo College of Education, was selected to deliver a keynote speech at the "7th International Scientific Forum". The forum was held in Oxford University in February 7th-8th, 2017.

Amar's speech was entitled "Relevance of Education System to Real World Needs".

Ohalo is a leading institution that specializes in teachers' and kindergarten teachers' training for B.Ed. in various disciplines, including Biology, Mathematics, English, Special Education, Jewish Studies, and Physical Education, as well as a M.Ed. in Organizational Management of Education systems. The College currently has 2,000 students, of which 60% are studying in the Education and Teaching professions and the remaining students are in continuing education programs, advanced studies, professional development and external studies. The overall task that Ohalo has set for itself is to shape a new generation of high quality teachers who will become a "spearhead" of relevant, future-oriented and value-committed teaching in Israel. The student population at Ohalo is heterogeneous and comes mainly from the peripheral areas of the country, including both religious and secular Jews, Bedouin, Druze, Christians, Muslims and new immigrants.

Innovative Pedagogy

The Dynamic Ohalo Education Solutions (DOES) team has developed a unique learning process called "Problem to Project Based Education" (P2PBE). It is an eight-step model that combines well-known and familiar learning and working methods. The model includes movement on two main axes: the horizontal axis where the students move from self-work to teamwork and the vertical axis where the students are requested to move within the framework of their learning from individual outcomes to shared outcomes. This model re-defines the role of the teacher and adapts it to the reality of the 21st century.

Adapted Learning Spaces

The implementation of the described dynamic learning model requires a redesign of the learning spaces, which were planned and designed to provide our teachers the tools to motivate their students through dynamic and engaging learning experience.
